Do you plan summer outings to nature centers or parks? Take this opportunity to learn about trees or plants. Otherwise, consider having your child help you plant a garden. Get some basic books from the library to help your child understand the basics and get them a little gardening gear for fun. Have them keep a little journal over the summer about what they've learned about each activity. Have them draw pictures or make leaf prints. You can even have them store leaf specimens in little baggies that you can staple to the journal pages. Have them journal about vacations too. With just a little planning, it is easy to incorporate learning into nearly any activity.
Children can learn math quickly when you let them study while having math games. They usually have avid appetite for learning new concepts and ideas. And as a parent or teacher, every day brings opportunities for you to motivate your kids in learning important math skills. You can motivate them by making fun activities and engaging them with different math games for kids.
Similarly, kids who are best at counting backward can learn how to subtract numbers easily. For example, if a student knows 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20; now it is very easy for this student to subtract 5 from 50 or any other number. Hence, learning backward counting is a key math skill too.
Multiplication is the next skill to learn after addition and subtraction. Again students with excellent skipped counting skills start learning times tables very fast. Skip counting is multiplication, actually. If we look at counting by 2's; it is 2 times table. Similarly kids learn 5 times table or 10 times table by skipping the numbers by 5's and 10's respectively.
Every youngster should be encouraged to designate a percentage for charity. Teaching them to 'give back' is a reward in disguise as they learn how to help other people, causes and organizations. Show them videos of some really poor parts of the world. They'll be glad to give! Ten percent is a typical amount and recommended by most church organizations.
To get smarter in math, kids need good mental math skills. Students who are competent at this skill, can add and subtract numbers easily. For example, to add 4 to 15, they need not to go up by 1's but they can go up by 4's to add in one step. This broadens their imagination power about number sense.
