# 72 Numbers And Counting Worksheets

In the article, "Helping your Pre-Schooler With Math-Beginning To Count," I had you working with counting and beginning to put meaning into those words by counting objects and having your child bring a certain number of objects to you. At this level, all math needs to be "concrete" which basically means touchable. It needs to be very hands on.

Prime numbers found little practical value until about the 1970's when public key cryptography was discovered. This procedure allows information to be coded so that only the person who knows the secret key can decipher the message. This protocol allows private information to be sent over the internet securely without the fear of such being intercepted and read by somebody for whom the information is not intended. This methodology allows us to conduct secure banking and financial transactions over the internet today.

Repeat this process with "2" and then "3" and so on. Do not work very long at one time-5 to 10 minutes-unless your child asks to do more. You may repeat this several times a day, but only for about 10 minutes at a time. You can also expand this pointing at numbers to outside the home while walking around the block looking at addresses and license plates. Numbers are everywhere, your child just needs to looks for them. If your child can start saying the name "There's a 4!" That's exciting. Be excited!

Remember this the next time you think a number is just a number is just a number. You never know what discoveries lie within the realm of mathematics and particularly within its domain of numbers. Think about this the next time you use the internet and give out your credit card number to buy that new item you want.

Back to number symbols. Here, we are literally talking about the symbols we use to write numbers: 1, 2, 5, 9, 12, 17, etc. No written words yet. With a young child start with just recognizing the symbols by pointing at them with you reinforcing the word. Show your child what a "1" looks like (they may already know this from reading books with you) and then ask them to find another 1 somewhere in the house. You will probably need to model for your child what you mean a couple of times. Point to the 1 on a remote control and/or a clock.

athematics skills can improve with just one technique -practice! Most of the children end up petrified of numbers and number games because of lack of appropriate knowledge. All this is a result of poor teaching mechanics. The vast school curriculum does not teach the children the perfect way of learning the subject. It's only proper practice and regularity that can make a student reach perfection! Do worksheets help a child?
