The study of prime numbers falls under the branch of mathematics known as Number Theory. This area of pure mathematics treats the study of numbers and their inherent properties as well as the interrelationships among broad classes of numbers and even number systems. Given all the elegant branches of mathematics such as topology, abstract algebra, and complex analysis, one would think that the study of just plain old numbers might be too simple or even boring. Yet two of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics deal directly or indirectly with prime numbers: the Riemann Hypothesis and the Goldbach Conjecture.

In another article, we will work more on number symbol and word recognition, the importance of number lines, and the beginning of number comparisons. Do not push your child too fast. There is no sense in working on something until your child is capable of understanding it. There is a great deal of variation between children. It doesn't matter what your neighbor's child can do. It only matters what your child can and wants to do. Don't push!

Back to number symbols. Here, we are literally talking about the symbols we use to write numbers: 1, 2, 5, 9, 12, 17, etc. No written words yet. With a young child start with just recognizing the symbols by pointing at them with you reinforcing the word. Show your child what a "1" looks like (they may already know this from reading books with you) and then ask them to find another 1 somewhere in the house. You will probably need to model for your child what you mean a couple of times. Point to the 1 on a remote control and/or a clock.

As a rule, parents work very hard at having their children enter school being able to count from 1 to 10, 1 to 20, or even 1 to 100. Please understand that being able to say the counting numbers in the correct order (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) is the same skill as learning to say the alphabet (a, b, c, d, etc.). Both of these are language-based skills.

Learning to count is the beginning of your child's familiarity with numbers. Babies generally get their first introduction to numbers and counting through the books we read to them. Many of these early books introduce letters, colors, numbers, object names, etc. As the child gets older, parents tend to move to books with a heavier language focus and away from math-based books. My suggestion to you is to make your book choices equally balanced between language and math-related topics. Also, look for ways to incorporate counting into the other books you read to your child.
