Math is a part of everyday life. We use math when go shopping, calculate distance when traveling, cook a yummy recipe, plant a garden, and play games. Kids can learn math concepts such as estimating, word problems, time and distance, measurement and basic addition and subtraction when playing games. Here are six different kid math activity ideas that are easy and fun:

Teach your child to point and count the buttons on a TV remote, DVD player, microwave, or stove. Pointing is a necessary skill to help your child master one-to-one matching. This skill will be necessary when first learning to read as well. Together, scan your home for windows, doorknobs, doors, or light switches. Point and count each item. Your child will have fun searching and counting while receiving a bit of exercise.

From a child's point of view, money comes from Mom and Dad's pockets. You need to take time to teach your children about the value of money. The lives of children who understand money and how to handle it, will be far easier than those of children who don't.

As you prepare dinner, invite your child to help you. At this age, children are eager to help prepare meals. Discuss the similarities and differences among measuring tools. Fill a teaspoon with water. Pour this into a tablespoon. Discuss which measuring spoon has more or less water. When children analyze measurements, they are strengthening their critical thinking skills. Sharing simple Math activities at home can be enjoyable and rewarding moments for you and your child. There are several common household items that you can creatively use to encourage your child to think mathematically. Your encouragement will help your child make Math a meaningful part of life.

Cooking is a wonderful way to practice many math skills. Lets them help measure out ingredients and discuss fractions with them. How many quarter cups are there in one cup? Make a pizza and cut into eight slices. How many slices are there in one-half of the pizza? Talk about cooking times and temperatures with kids. Let them use a thermometer to test cold or hot food items.

Do you give your children an allowance? Give them their allowance in denominations that encourage savings. If their allowance is \$10, give them a five dollar bill and five one dollar bills. Encourage them to set a couple of the one dollar bills aside for savings. Practice what you preach. Children learn what they are taught but they mimic what they see. If you struggle with money, you can work on your own finances while teaching your kids the value of money. A good education about money is one of the best tools you can give your children.
